Barred Owl

Strix varia

Description:

Also known as the "Hoot Owl," this is a large owl with a pale face, dark lines around it's eyes, and a yellow beak. The only typical owl in the Eastern United States with brown eyes (all the others have yellow eyes).

Habitat:

Mixed woods in wetlands. Circle B Bar Reserve, Lakeland, FL

Notes:

This owl was massive. In the last photo you can see a little black bird that kept attempting to chase the owl away. It succeeded only in annoying the owl and very nearly got pecked on a number of occasions.

I called it a little black bird, but in reality, I believe it was an American Crow . . . . I'm telling you, this was a BIG owl.
