Malachite - Malaquita

Description:

It is named for the malachite mineral, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings. Adults feed on flower nectar, rotting fruit, dead animals, and bat dung. Females lay eggs on the new leaves of plants in the Acanthaceae family, especially ruellia. Malachites are often confused with Philaethria dido. They have similar coloration, but their wing shapes are different.--------------------------Se llama así por el mineral malaquita, que es similar en color al verde claro en las alas de la mariposa. Los adultos se alimentan de néctar de las flores, fruta podrida, animales muertos y estiércol de murciélago. Las hembras ponen los huevos en las hojas nuevas de plantas de la familia Acanthaceae, especialmente ruellia. Malaquitas se confunden a menudo con la especie Philaethria dido. Ellos tienen una coloración similar, pero sus formas de alas son diferentes.

Habitat:

Habitats are subtropical wooded areas. It is found throughout Central and northern South America, where it is one of the most common butterfly species. Its distribution extends as far north as southern Texas and the tip of Florida, Cuba, and south to Brazil.---------------------------- Los hábitats son áreas boscosas tropicales.
