A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Zenaida asiatica
Brown and gray dove with a white stripe on wings edge when resting. They have a black stripe on their cheek, and red eyes surrounded by a blue ring. They have a square tail with white and black markings.
These visit my backyard throughout the year. They inhabit desert, city, rural, and suburban areas.
Fun Facts: 1. Their migration patterns surround the timing of the fruiting saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Desert. 2. They feed their young crop milk which is a secreted from their esophagus. 3. In Texas, by 1939, their population dropped from 12 million to less than a million. This was attributed to hunting and loss of habitat. :( 4. The oldest recorded White-winged Dove was nearly 22 years of age. Ref: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Whit...
