Giant Asian Mantis

Description:

One of the largest praying mantis species in the world, this green-colored female mantis is almost 90 millimeters (9 cm). In the second photo, you can compare it's size to that of a house gecko near it. This Hierodula mantis species have the ability to fly. They are green to camouflage themselves against the greenery of nature but with a slight pink coloration on their thorax. They are very common in the Sabahan forests here. Their eyes can turn from green in the day time to dark-colored during evening. This mantis shows a pair of dark red eyes taken with my camera flash.

Habitat:

In bushes around Sukau, Lower Kinabatangan, Sabah. It will visit this veranda several nights to hunt for nocturnal insects that are attracted to the lights here.
