Lesser Black Whipsnake

Demansia vestigiata

Description:

Around a metre long, and 3 cm thick. It's hard to describe this snakes colours. My initial thought was brown, but then it looked pale grey-blue in places & some scales have a red tip also.

Habitat:

Coastal scrubland.

Notes:

Cape Hillsborough N.P.

Thanks Tic. I was lucky to see him, he's a great colour for the Australian bushland.

Exactly! I never get any closer than this & always make sure I have an escape route! I'll leave the ID-ing to experts like you :)

No problem :) I found a great website that let me narrow the snakes down by regions with Queensland, helps a lot. And there are so many deadly snakes in Australia, best to stay away from them all and get pictures like these :)

That's great! Thank you Ashley! I'm so lost with snakes & like you say, they are so variable too. Glad to have an ID for this beauty. Thanks again :)

Good idea to keep your distance, it's venomous :) This is a variable species, and this is a lighter individual. If you do a Google image search with the scientific name, you will find light individuals that look just like this beautiful guy :)
