Gray Ratsnake

Pantherophis spiloides

Description:

Large, colorful ratsnake (~ 2 meters long). Lots of yellow and brown, strongly patterned.

Habitat:

Cedar glade

Notes:

These snakes are often called chicken snakes in the south because of their propensity to enter chicken coops and eat the eggs. This one is in a defensive position and ready to strike. It would periodically vibrate its tail to warn us off, a common threat display.
