Great Basin gopher snake

Pituophis catenifer deserticola

Description:

Adult gopher snake about 4.5 ft long. Beautiful dark and lighter pattern that resemble a chain.

Habitat:

Spotted on the Deep Lake Trail.

Notes:

The Great Basin gopher snake is nonvenomous. Known to mimic rattlesnakes by flattening its head when threatened.

I was hoping to find a rattlesnake on my weekend excursion to eastern Washington. Instead I found a gopher snake. You're right I can't complain.
