Lithobates sphenocephalus
This is a well camouflaged frog that is difficult to see, especially when in pine straw and twigs, unless movement is detected.

This frog was seen on a trail when hiking in First Landing State Park, Virginia Beach, VA. It was very difficult to see due to its excellent mottled camouflage, but a jump alerted my daughter's keen eyes to it.

It never ceases to amaze me how well camouflage works in the animal world. While on vacation this year I came across grass parking lot for a nature preserve that had a thicket of bushes adjacent to it. I noticed a eastern cotton tail kit in the lot on my first day. I checked the lot every day while there and spotted. On most days however, I didn't we it until it moved, even though I was looking for it/them specifically. They blended so well. Great series. Thanks for sharing.
