Coniferous & deciduous forest areas in either a temporary or permanent body of water. Namely in muddy areas.
Have some toxins in their skin, hence the bright-warning coloration. Not toxic to humans via touch. Do not eat.

I was out geocaching in WV, we nearly stepped on him in a wooded area!
