Melanerpes lewis
Large woodpeckers with iridescent green-black backs, pink undersides, gray breasts and collars, and red faces rimmed with black. Males and females look alike. Pic 2 shows its needle-like tongue. Pic 6 shows it gathering wood chips which it uses to line its nest.
Spotted in Klickitat County, Washington State at the Catherine Creek Day Use Area. Mostly oak forest.
Ranges in the western United States. Unlike most other woodpeckers Lewis's woodpecker will use the "hawking method" for catching flying insect prey.
