Plinthocoelium suaveolens
Metallic blue long horn beetle, approx. 3.5 inches long with red-and-black segmented legs. Eyes are also metallic blue.
Seasonal wetlands during monsoon season, native grassland at a mile high with grass reaching above seven feet tall, mixed with mesquite trees. Specimen found in a small clearing near planted pine and cottonwood trees.
Specimen found deceased in a rocky clearing. I've been here since 1997 and have never seen this coloration of beetle before, though there are plenty of long horn beetles. I've also noticed a dramatic influx of pale metallic blue wasps. Is there anything environmentally which could cause a metallic blue coloration or is this pure coincidence?
Beautiful longhorn! Feel free to add it to my mission http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/2850...
Thanks Faredin! I also got an email suggesting the same, from an entomologist in China:
"The Cerambycidae of your photo is one american Callichromatini,
Plinthocoelium suaveolens (Linneo), female. The male is all red."
Beautiful first spotting and wonderful information. Welcome to Project Noah!
