Eastern Garter Snake

Thamnophis sirtalis

Description:

A slender dark bodied garter snake (about 30 inches) with three yellow stripes going the length of the body, one down the middle and the other two on the 2nd and 3rd scale rows.

Habitat:

This was one of three that live in the backyard of a friend in NW Iowa.

Notes:

Nice group of snakes that, while not tame, could be seen regularly from a somewhat close distance. Strange as they live in town and kids normally harass snakes in towns.
