Five-Banded Tiphiid Wasp

Myzinum quinquecinctum

Description:

These black and yellow wasps are about 2.5 to 3 cm in length. Females are towards the shorter end of this size range. They are so named due to the five bands of yellow on the abdomen. Females can sting.

Habitat:

I photographed this wasp at the edge of a pond in a deciduous forest.

Notes:

The larvae of this wasp is parasitic on some beetles.
