Urocitellus columbianus
The Columbian Ground Squirrel is a species of rodent in the family Sciuridae. They are only active approximately 100 days each year. The males emerge first from hibernation each Spring - prior to the emergence of leafy vegetation - and rely on food stores previously cached to survive. Females emerge soon after, mate, and reproduce with the number of offspring ranging from three to five.
Prefers grasslands and sedges, but can be found in intermontane valleys, open woodland, subalpine meadows, etc.
This watchful mother and her litter of three were found along the Hidden Lake Overlook trail in the Logan Pass area of Glacier National Park.
