Mourning dove

Zenaida macroura

Description:

Two fledgling mourning dove chicks who barely fit in their nest anymore. After spending much of the day stretching wings and legs, they flew away the next morning.

Habitat:

Obviously well-adapted to suburban neighborhoods and backyard bird feeders.

Notes:

The nest was originally a robin's nest. This is the first year it was used by the doves, but this is the third clutch of the year. The first clutch only resulted in one chick making it to flight. The second clutch snuck out while we were out of town, before we could count beaks.
