Ringneck Snake

Diadophis punctatus

Description:

A small snake that has a gray back and a white ring around the neck. The belly is yellow with small black dots, and fades to orange then red at the tail.

Habitat:

Found on a sandy trail at dusk. In Palo duro canyon state park

Notes:

A very common defense posture for this species is to roll the tail red side up. Red is a warning color in nature, and this is supposed to ward off predators.

Thanks! The northern subspecies can get up to 2 ft, but most adults are between 12 and 18 inches.
