Sooty mold

Scorias spongiosa

Description:

This unappealing mold grows exclusively on the honeydew of the beech blight aphid. This makes it quite the specialist. The nutritious aphid drippings allow the fungus to grow to incredible sizes, sometimes as big as a football.
