Northern water snake

Nerodia sipedon

Description:

A beautiful snake decided to take a swim with an unknowing me. Then, it snuck out of the water to bask at the water's edge. Northern water snakes are often encountered in this way. They're nonvenomous.

Habitat:

Shallow creek with a max depth of about 5 feet.

Notes:

I was so excited to spot my first large snake that I scrambled out of the water, up a hillside and to my car to get my camera.

Thanks, Adam. Snakes are pretty elusive.
