Monotropa uniflora
One of at least 3000 species of non-chlorophyll dependent plants, Monotropa uniflora is a heterotrophic organism from the family Ericaceae, which includes other non-chlorphyll dependent plants as well as blueberries (Vaccinium sp.). Monotropa uniflora uses a mycorrhizal fungus as a pathway to get nutrients from a tree. Essentially, the mycorrhizal fungus is the "messenger" in this process.
Found in a deciduous/coniferous forest among leaf and needle litter.
