Bird's Nest Fungi

Cyathus sp

Description:

Like their name, these fungi do resemble the nests of birds; that too with "eggs" in them. The eggs (peridoles) contain spores that are released when raindrops hit them. This is most likely the Fluted Bird's Nest fungi Cyathus striatus...but I am erring on the side of caution.

Habitat:

On the remnants of the trunk of an Araucaria tree that had to be chopped down when it was damaged by supercyclone Amphan.

Notes:

These are inedible but I read that they are related to button mushrooms, shitake mushrooms, and oyster mushrooms (https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/PP...)

Thank you, Leuba. I am hardly going out these days so I am always happy to spot something on the terrace/backyard. These discoveries brighten up my day.

Thank you, Tukup, you won't believe the number of years this one was on my bucket list...and then, twice in my backyard...Mother Nature can be kind. Good luck to you and an open invitation to come over to my small garden...
