Halictid Bee

Description:

A metallic blue-green and red bee of the Family Halictidae or Sweat Bees. They are very important pollinators of wild flowers, nest in the ground and run the whole gauntlet of social behavior from solitary to eusocial. This is a relatively large one at 8 mm in length.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.
