Owl Fly

Description:

This was my very first Owl Fly! I was so excited I almost scared it away! It has a bushy brow and a bright white tip to the abdomen, 5 cm long. Family Ascalaphidae of the Neuroptera. New World species tend to be more cryptically colored and elusive than the brightly colored Owl Flies of the Old World. They are predators that catch their prey on the wing.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.
