Mountain avens

Dryas octopetala

Description:

The Mountain avens is an arctic-alpine plant in the Rosaceae family. The flowers have eight creamy white petals - hence the species name octopetala. In Iceland, where it is the national flower, it flowers in May and June.

Habitat:

Barren rocky area between glaciers, volcanoes and flood plain, Skaftafell National Park. Last shot in the spotting below shows the habitat: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/374...

Notes:

The plant's actual leaves are not the ones seen on the foreground, but can bee seen at the back on the top and right edge on the 3rd shot. The same species spotted in the Alps can be seen here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/654...
