Thamnophis sirtalis
The common garter snake is medium-sized reaching up to 3 feet in length. It is black with three, yellow lengthwise stripes on their back and sides. The snake I observed was about 18 inches in length.
I spotted the common garter snake at Tamarac near Pine Lake. They are found throughout Minnesota including along rivers & lakes, suburban areas & backyards. Garter snakes eat a varied diet including frogs, earthworms, insects and small mammals.
Garter snakes are important because they eat destructive rodents/mice and should not be killed.

Nice spotting. We usually only see images of many tangled together from here.
