Tule Elk

Cervus canadensis nannodes

Description:

Tule Elk is native to only California. Small, about half the size of a Roosevelt Elk. Lighter in color almost like a buckskin. Darker and longer hair on the neck.

Habitat:

Grasslands and marshes of protected areas.

Notes:

In the 1800s they were near extinction and only a few were found in San Joaquin Valley and those were immediately protected. In 1978 after the numbers were brought up, 10 were reintroduced into Point Reyes National Seashore. These have grown to over 400. On this large strip of land they are free ranging and protected.
