White-spotted Satyr

Manataria hercyna maculata

Description:

The White-spotted Satyr (Manataria hercyna) is the only memder of the genus Manataria from the subfamily Satyrinae in the family Nymphalidae found in the Neotropical zone. Range, Mexico south through Colombia. It likes dark places during the day, crevices in trees in the forest, or under things and is well disguised on tree trunks. Walking in the cloud forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica, we would disturb them as we walked by and they would fly a short distance and settle into a dark place again. There were many in the forest, and the guide said he hadn't seen so many, for years.

Habitat:

Cloud Forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica
