Staghorn Sumac

Description:

The Staghorn Sumac / Velvet Sumac is a tall shrub most common in Canada to the east side of South Carolina. The height goes up to thirty feet but the average is ten feet. The berries are red when they are younger. Their clusters look almost like grapes but in an upright position. It has knife shaped leaves that turn a beautiful red in the fall. The berries and bark feel like velvet hence the name Velvet Sumac.

Habitat:

We found this shrub on the edge between the field and forest near our school.
