Froehlichia floridana
About 2 ft tall. white waxy flower at the very tip of a long leafless stalk. No apparent sepals or other "leafy" structure attached to the flower. A small cluster of leaves at the very base. These leaves were about 4 inches long and maybe 3/4" wide.
Cottonweed (Froelichia floridana) is an annual member of the Amaranth family found statewide in Florida, and across much of the eastern half of the U.S. except the extreme northeast. Growing along the side of the road in a transition zone between oak scrub/sandhill/mesic pine flatland. More of the scrubby sandhill than the flatland. ALong rt. 11, maybe 2 miles north of the public shooting range.
