Southern bog lemming

Synaptomys cooperi

Description:

Small rodent-like, fawn coloured undercoat with with longer dark hairs (see second photo), overall reddish tint on back. Ears tiny and round. Tail very short.

Habitat:

Found in an open grassy area near boggy fields along the Bay of Fundy.

Notes:

Yes, most voles and lemmings look alike but given the location (Nova Scotia) the options are more limited than in other areas. The short tail, insignificant ears and size suggest this is a southern bog lemming (a.k.a southern vole). This one was completely unperturbed at being observed and kept nibbling on grass as I took pictures (see second pic).
