spotted worm sea cucumber, Medusa worm

Synapta maculata

Description:

This species is perhaps the longest sea cucumber species in the world http://invertebrates.si.edu/echinoderm/b... although this specimen was probably less than 1.5 meters long. Accurate length is difficult due to the inflation and deflation that characterizes sea cucumbers.

Habitat:

In shallow water on sand, near the beach shore.

Notes:

This was photographed by my daughter. She observed it in shallow water and removed it to clear beach to photograph, then returned it to where she found it. Map location is approximate.

You're right.. and getting carried along the Qld coast by the East Australian Current. Something to look out for.

I think these may also occur in northern Australia waters :-)

What an amazing creature. Indonesian waters have some fantastic stuff. After the mimic octopus and the Coelacanths nothing suprises I suppose.
