Autumn Crocus

Colchicum autumnale

Description:

Lots of these pop out of the ground in small groups during September, when everything else is dying due to the hot, dry summer. After a few days they are gone again. I assume the green leaves may be part of the same plant.

Habitat:

Mountain airfield with scattered trees and bushes at around 3,700'. Sun-bleached arid ground with hardy thistles and other plants.
