It could be for waisting disease. If I'm not mistaken, waisting disease started here in Colorado, just outside of Ft. Collins. They track and study it vigorously here! It could also be for migration patterns, but waisting disease is my guess!
The Elk population at RMNP has exploded and the park service has put fencing around vegation that they want to keep elk out. The Elk will go down into Loveland CO from RMNP and back. The elk move all over the park. I think they just want a map of the movements of Elk to keep a better track of them.

Do you know what they are tracking them for? Are they just curious of where they travel to or if they are still alive?
The U.S Fish and Wildlife tagged and put a radio collar on it to track is movements thru RMNP
Is this a captive elk? Or what's around it's neck and in it's ear?
