Cicada Killer Wasp

Sphecius speciosus

Description:

Very large, 2 inches, black and white abdomen, brown fuzzy thorax, clear brown tinted wings

Habitat:

sandy areas

Notes:

First time I have seen one of these. It was in the dunes area of the beach on Wilmette Harbor. Scared the heck out of me due to their size, but seemed non-aggressive and more interested in keeping other wasps out of its area.
