Spinybacked Orbweaver

Gasteracantha cancriformis

Description:

I very nearly knocked down a spider web without looking this morning! I am not a person that loves spiders, but this creature is rather magnificent. In the 35 years that I have lived in Georgia, I do not remember ever seeing a spider like this. I keep thinking of animals that wear special patterns to scare off predators. Is that the purpose of this spiked and spotted carapace?

Habitat:

Suburban Georgia, many large hardwood trees.
