Wood gnat

Sylvicola sp.

Description:

An unusual looking fly about 15mm long with dark markings through the wings.

Habitat:

Attracted to night lights at the local school.

Notes:

This seems to be a very similar fly to http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/379... which was spotted at the same time. Is it Sylvicola maybe showing dimorphism...?

Both are similar to http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/128... which has been formally identified as Sylvicola dubius... but one key issue was the two-toned antennae... do I really want to get into this !!?

Thanks bayucca. These are turning out a lot trickier than they look. There's an incredible lack of accurate info plus some mis-info so we are sending them to our gov entomology people... stay tuned. :-)

Looks similar to your other one, might also be Anisopodidae, but it is not the same one.
