Nice find! The Red-spotted Purple is a Pipevine Swallowtail mimic, so I am not surprised that it was confusing. One way you can separate this one from the Swallowtails is that it has no tails. The color pattern is a bit different as well but not always easy to spot, especially when they are moving.
