Smooth Earth Snake

Virginia valeriae

Description:

A first species for me. In Oklahoma, we have the rough earth snake. In Illinois, the smooth earth snake. This species, as the name suggests, does not have keeled scales.

Habitat:

At "Snake Road" in southern Illinois.

Notes:

This individual appeared to be preparing to shed, as its eyes were milky.
