Sawfly larvae

Description:

Sawfly larvae--I'm not sure of the species yet. Please let me know if you know. Apparently this is a defensive posture they are in, according to what I could find online so far. But I spotted them in this pose from a good distance away, so I don't think it was my presence they were reacting to. If anyone knows more about this behavior, I'd be very curious to learn more.

Habitat:

Spotted in a woodland tract near wetlands, feeding on the large leaves of a shrub or young tree, which I am not sure of the ID of yet, either.

thanks :)

It was incredible seeing them! They were all holding their positions motionless, like some sort of exotic fringe around the edge of the leaf.
