American Black Bear

Ursus americanus

Notes:

Saw this in my hike tonight. A cedar power pole became infested with carpenter ants and a black bear tore into the pole to get them. I contacted the power company. The pole was half clawed/chewed through. He may come back tonight to finish the job.

Hi Karen. Did you notice any ants in the stumps? We have had a terrible increase in carpenter ants (hey - maybe a possible sighting...) and I suspect that's what ours are after. I'm a little concerned about Terra. We've been putting out bait trays and I wonder if it would harm the bear...
