Description:

Irregular black masses growing where a branch had been cut.

Habitat:

Rural area. There is a river just vertically below where the tree is. So closer examination was not possible.

Notes:

Story behind the name; https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/Hi... This fungus burns well and embers keep glowing for a long time. Smoke is reportedly pungent..
