Kiang or Wild Ass

Equus kiang

Description:

Wild ass. Short black mane. Chestnut brown back, cream belly.

Habitat:

Spotting this on sparsegrassland enroute Pangong Lake, Ladakh. Usually spotted in small groups.

Notes:

It was fun to see one suddenly kick out with its hind legs and then roll over gleefully even as the others grazed placidly. This is likely to be the Western Kiang that is found in Tibet. Too far away to hear sounds mae by this animal.

I have been planning a trip to the Rann of Kutch for ages to see these wild asses. Wild ass....all I saw them eat was grass. :) Local people eat some meat.

I do remember from my ride from Ranthambore to Jaipur. I saw these I marveled at their beauty. Do they eat meat at all?

There were small herds and a lot of kicking and rolling about was taking place.
