Believe this is a grass, garter or gopher snake.
The only grass snake in NY is the smooth green snake (which this is not) and gopher snakes are not found in NY. :)

Hi, Pamela. Do you have any other photos that show more of the snake? My best guess with what I see is the common gartersnake but I would like to see more before committing to that. :-)
