Horseshoe Crab

Description:

Marine arthropods. Because of their origin 450 million years ago, they are considered living fossils.

Habitat:

Primarily in and around shallow ocean waters on soft sandy or muddy bottoms. They occasionally come to shore to mate.

Notes:

Several horseshoe crabs were on this beach matting.
