Argiope aurantia
The black and yellow garden spider, also called writing spider, or corn spider, is relatively large (up to an inch long) but harmless. Its abdomen is black with dramatic yellow or orange markings. This beneficial spider lived in my rose bush all summer.
Contiguous United States, Hawaii, southern parts of Canada.
Frontal, ventral, and lateral views of this spider are shown in the photos for this spotting.
