Flower urchin

Toxopneustes pileolus

Description:

This sea urchin is pale pink in color and although it looks harmless it is venomous. The stings of the flower urchin are in the petal like features (pedicellariae) of the urchin, not in the spines which are underneath the pedicellariae. The pedicellariae are also like suckers and this way the sea urchin can cover itself with pebbles and other debris from the sea bottom. Habitat:

Islands near Manuel Antonio.
