Tropical Buckeye - Mariposa

Description:

Adults feed on nectar and also take fluids from mud and damp sand. Males perch on bare ground or low plants, occasionally patrolling in search of females, but they are not territorial. The female lays eggs singly on buds or the upper side of leaves. There are three to four broods from March to October. The caterpillars are solitary and feed on the foliage, flowers, and fruits of the host plant. The eyespots are used to frighten predators. ---------------------------- Los adultos se alimentan de néctar y también toman líquidos del barro y la arena húmeda. Los machos se posan en el suelo desnudo o las plantas bajas, en ocasiones patrullan en busca de hembras, pero no son territoriales. La hembra pone los huevos en forma individual sobre brotes o la parte superior de las hojas. Hay tres a cuatro temporadas de cría de marzo a octubre. Las orugas son solitarias y se alimentan de las hojas, flores y frutos de la planta huésped. Las manchas oculares se utilizan para asustar a los depredadores.

It lives in tropical lowlands including fields, brushlands, sandy islands. From Southern North America through Central America to Argentina. ------------------------ Vive en las tierras bajas tropicales, incluyendo campos, matorrales, islas de arena.
