Wingless Ichneumon Wasp

Gelis sp.

Description:

I have never seen ants on the island, so I was very surprised to find this. On closer inspection, I realized it was a wingless wasp. The last time I thought I found an ant here, it also turned out to be a wingless wasp, but even more convincing than this one as an ant: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/786...

Habitat:

Disturbed parking lot near a small patch of spruce woods

Lauren, I guess I'm eating my words. I just learned today that people have seen ants on the island. I think maybe they just are not very common here like they are elsewhere and can only be found in certain places. It might be because many places are too covered in moss, are just rock substrate, or get washed out from the rain or something.

This must be an Ichneumonid (male) based on the 3 oscelli and the more than 16 antennal segments.

I think on the mainland, but I have never seen an ant on the island. Same with ticks.
