White-breasted Waterhen

Amaurornis phoenicurus

Description:

Dark grey upperparts and flanks, and conspicuous white underparts. Beak is yellowish, with a reddish base.Face and front of neck are white underside of the tail is rusty brown. Legs are yellow.

Habitat:

It was foraging on a vacant piece of land adjoining an inhabited house with a road in front. I spotted it from the car and it spotted me too...stopped for a moment to assess my intentions which gave me time to shoot 2-3 shots. It flew up to the boundary wall of the adjoining house and slipped in through the ion rails into that garden. Its last look seemed to mock me as if saying...Catch me if you can.

Notes:

Called Dahuk in Bengali, this bird finds mention in many poems.
