Description:

Football sized and shaped nest of a hornet variously called the bald-faced hornet, white-faced hornet, white-tailed hornet, blackjacket or bull wasp.

Habitat:

Temperate deciduous woodland in the eastern Appalachian piedmont.

Notes:

Spotted hanging in a tree near a small stream. Images are scans of 35mm color slides. Date is notional, but accurate within a week either way.
