Caelifera
10/1/13 8:00 p.m. Danielle Isolano I sighted this grasshopper in Newport News, Virginia. The grasshopper belongs to the suborder Caelifera. It has a green and brown coloring with red eyes. The ability to camouflage into these colors allows the grasshopper to blend in with surrounding trees and plants to avoid being attacked. Their pinchers help them feed on leaves and other vegetation.
Grasshoppers prefer grassy areas with plenty of plants and vegetation. They are plentiful in many locations and can be found in hot areas such as deserts to moist areas such as rain forests.
